A Sprinkle in Time: Cookies & Calligraphy
What do you get when two Austin go-getters put their heads together and dream up the perfect collaboration? A super sweet night made of sugar and creativity!
On April 13, Mint & Maple and Mindy's Bakeshop hosted Cookies & Calligraphy, a fabulous evening at Patricia's Table complete with pink, bubbly cocktails courtesy of the amazing She+Him Bartending, and gorgeous flowers by Black Petal Floral Design. Our fabulous photography Melissa Lewis captured the night beautifully, and we were thrilled to host a room full of lovely ladies excited to learn the art of cookie decorating and brush lettering!
The evening began with tasty treats, compliments of Mindy's Bakeshop and the goodness of Trader Joe’s. Mindy’s lemon cream puffs were fit for a fairy goddess and were the death to my Whole30 eating. I regret nothing.
Additionally, each guest was greeted with the Bubbly Rose, a cocktail specially designed for the evening. If you've ever wondered if rosé, grapefruit juice, simple syrup and champagne taste RIDICULOUSLY DELICIOUS together, then you'd be right. She+Him Bartending taught us how to the pink elixir, and we all left planning our next spring soiree to wow our guests with this drink-to-impress.
Mindy Sepeti, co-owner and the Mindy in Mindy's Bakeshop, started the evening off with telling us about lovely self, when her love for baking began and tidbits of the journey that led her to where she is today. She is a delight and a beautiful inspiration to us all, and we couldn't wait to get started!
Each attendee received six cookies in various shapes: a circle, bunny, sun, flower and two iced plaque cookies. Mindy taught us how to make royal icing and fill the piping bags correctly so as not to get those pesky bubbles. We learned the bubbles can really kill your cookie decorating game.
Ready to pipe, we stared in awe as Mindy outlined her cookie perfectly, flooded the cookie with the icing then smoothed the icing out. It was captivating to watch Mindy work, y'all - she's such a pro!
Practice, practice, practice. Armed with the tricks and tools to become our own expert cookie decorator, we felt like we could actually do a pretty awesome job ourselves by the end!
Next up, Natalie, founder and chief visionary for Mint & Maple, introduced herself and shared her heart for Mint & Maple. Diving in, we immediately kicked things off by mixing our own watercolor paint to get brush lettering started!
Starting with simple up and down strokes, we learned how to correctly hold the brush lettering pen, get the right amount of paint on the tip of the brush and put brush to paper.
Once we got the hang of the different strokes, we started practicing our letters. It is immensely therapeutic to take the time to pay attention to every detail when creating each letter. We rush around busily day in and day out, and when we slow down a bit to watch what our hands create, it works wonders on the soul.
After mastering each letter, we started connecting our letters together to write our name and various words. While some of us got the hang of it quickly, others were excited about spending time practicing this newfound craft.
To cap off the evening, we learned to make edible watercolor paint to decorate and paint our white plaque cookies with. Each lady practiced writing her name and decorating the cookie with floral designs. It was purely magical to see everyone's creativity displayed through their unique cookies!
Cookies & Calligraphy was truly a match made in heaven, and we hope everyone had a wonderful time learning new skills to host a party with personal touches. We have a feeling this won't be the last of fun, unique collaborations...
Many thanks to Mindy's Bakeshop, She+Him Bartending, Black Petal Floral Design and Melissa Lewis Photography who partnered with us to make this night an evening to remember! And a big thank you, thank you, thank you to all who came outexcited to learn and have a fun night with us!
